Govt Warns Against Use Of Paracetamol To Soften Meat

The Osun State Government has cautioned against the practice of using paracetamol to soften meat and the use of bleaching detergent for cassava processing to induce ‘whiteness of fufu and garri.

Special Adviser on Public Health, Pharmacist Siji Olamiju and the State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode gave the warning at a joint news conference in Oshogbo.

They said the illicit acts affect organs of the body such as the liver, kidneys, heart and the small intestines.

Olamiju commended public health surveillance volunteers who uncovered the practice.

He said it was criminal and one borne of deadly ignorance and urged those engaged in it to desist as it portends great danger to the health of the consumers in the state.

The Adviser alerted that ‘hypo’, which is a bleaching agent meant for laundry ought not to even get in contact with the skin least of all the alimentary system.

In her address, Mrs. Egbemode said the awareness campaign and public sensitisation on the issue was aimed educating caterers and cassava processors and averting possible adverse health implications of the illicit acts which had been on over the years.

She further noted that report of the sharp practices had gotten to the state executive council meeting.

Mrs. Egbemode explained that that the illicit acts was perpetrated to tenderise meat and to process tough cow leg in order to cut cost and to reduce the cooking time.
