Iran, on Saturday, disclosed that its military ‘unintentionally’ shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet earlier this week in the outskirts of Tehran, killing all 176 people aboard.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif made the disclosure on his official Twitter account, when he tweeted that: “Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster. Our profound regrets, apologies and condolences to our people, to the families of all victims, and to other affected nations.”

According to officials, the plane, en route to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, was carrying 167 passengers and nine crew members from several countries, including 82 Iranians, at least 57 Canadians and 11 Ukrainians.

It was said that the Ukrainian plane was mistaken for a “hostile target”, in the wake of the heightened tensions with the United States.

The incident happened few hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on United States bases in Iraq in response to the U.S. drone attack that killed Iranian Quds Forces commander Qassem Soleimani.
