Agueroooooo! Why Is This Prolific Goal Scorer Not Adored?
By Ekene Dike
Everyone was entertained during Manchester City’s rampant victory over Aston Villa in the English Premier League last Sunday.
Sergio Aguero displayed a world-class performance scoring a hat-trick and by that, dethroning Thierry Henry as the highest-scoring non-English player in the English Premier League.
After that milestone, what follows should have been his promotion in the pecking order of world-class strikers and the due recognition he deserves in the English Premier League.
There are, however, questions if he would ever be called the greatest striker of all time in the English Premier League. That is despite the fact that for the past decade, he has been terrorizing defenses in the domestic league and in the Champions League.
His last-minute goal against QPR in the 2011/2012 season which enabled Manchester City to win the league has left an indelible mark in the history of English football.
However, his three goals against Aston Villa took him to 177 goals in 255 games which brought him to level with current Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard in the fourth position on the elite list of the Premier League’s all-time top scorers. He has also cruised past Alan Shearer in the all-time hat-trick record.
It is expected that Sergio Aguero will also surpass Frank Lampard and Andy Cole’s 187 goal count and also go ahead to reach the sensational 200 goals record presently held by Alan Shearer who has 260 goals and Manchester United’s erstwhile legendary skipper Wayne Rooney who has 208 goals, given his addiction to scoring goals.
Although, he is regarded as a cult hero by the Manchester City supporters, he isn’t regarded as a legendary striker in England despite his countless number of impeccable performances.
Many pundits, it appears, still prefer Arsenal’s Thierry Henry to him, regardless of the fact that he has scored more goals than Henry and won more Premier League titles.
Albeit, since his arrival in 2011, he has managed to emerge in the PFA Premier League team of the year just once, in 2018. That isn’t fair enough for a player who has played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s conquest in English Football, in conjunction with his indispensable nature in the team. The Argentine has remained as the most preferred choice for the number 9 position.
Edin Dzeko, Jovetic, Negredo, Gabriel Jesus and Kelechi Iheanacho have been compelled to contend with the Argentine’s immense talent. Some of the strikers have gone to seek for greener pastures.
His consistency as a prolific goal scorer is astonishing and gallantly scoring at least 20 goals in six out of his eight full seasons at Manchester City shows that he is a monster in front of goal.
Pep Guardiola was asked his opinion on the comparison that has been dominating the football world between who is a better striker among Messi and Aguero after the game against Aston Villa.
He responded saying that Messi can play in several positions. Thus, Lionel Messi is the better player. That is an epitome of how underrated the Argentine sensation is.
Nevertheless, in recent seasons, the likes of Sadio Mane, Harry Kane , Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Marcus Rashford have been revered for their goal-scoring exploits.
That has enabled soccer pundits to rate them over Sergio Aguero. These strikers haven’t been as consistent as he is and they haven’t even won more trophies than him. So there is a huge gap between him and the rest of the pack.
