Commonwealth Doctors Condemn Undressing Of Female Doctor In Abuja
Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) has condemned
the assault on a female medical doctor that was reportedly stripped naked by relatives of a patient at Maitama District Hospital, Abuja, on Jan 9.
The President of CMA, Dr Osahon Enabulele, said in a statement in Abuja that the attention of CMA was drawn to the assault of a female medical doctor at the hospital by relatives of a patient who passed on while under the care of the hospital.
He stated that the attack took place on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, which was two days after the demise of the patient.
Enabulele said that this was said to have been preceded by severe threats to the life of the female medical doctor.
He added that “CMA notes with great dismay that this is the second case of assault on medical doctors in the same Maitama District hospital in Abuja and a total of six assaulted health workers, four medical doctors and two
nurses.”
He said that this was piqued by the fact that the current incidence took place in spite of the presence of security personnel in the hospital.
He said “the doctor was not only beaten up but also stripped naked within the hospital premises while she was on duty.”
He noted that “such uncivilised act of assault impinged on the autonomy of physicians, as the violent propensity of the patient’s relatives resulted from the relatives’ disagreement.”
He said the disagreement was with the physician’s clinical decision not to transfuse blood to the late patient, said to have had severe cardiac condition.
According to him, the CMA is not currently in a position to make a declarative statement on the pre-morbid personality, character and
motives of the elements behind the assault on the female medical doctor.
He, however, noted that “the CMA strongly condemns the assault on the female physician.”
He, therefore, urged the Nigerian Medical Association to ensure that the Maitama District hospital undertook full rehabilitation of the female medical doctor.
