Buhari’s Anti-Corruption Campaign Under Scrutiny As Nigeria Slips In TI Ranking
The success of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign was coming into scrutiny on Thursday after the revelation of the country’s marginal slip in the 2019 Corruption Perception Index.
The country moved from 144 to 146 in the global ranking of corruption among 180 countries surveyed.
According to the report released on Thursday at a press conference in Abuja, the country scored 26 out of 100, a drop from the 27 points it had scored since 2017.
The index scores corruption perception in countries from 0 to 100 with the most corrupt getting 0 and the least corrupt getting 100.
“The Corruption Perceptions Index 2019 reveals a staggering number of countries are showing little to no improvement in tackling corruption. Our analysis also suggests that reducing big money in politics and promoting inclusive political decision-making are essential to curb corruption,” the report read.
“From fraud that occurs at the highest levels of government to petty bribery that blocks access to basic public services like healthcare and education, citizens are fed up with corrupt leaders and institutions.
“This frustration fuels a growing lack of trust in government and further erodes public confidence in political leaders, elected officials and democracy.”
“Governments must urgently address the corrupting role of big money in political party financing and the undue influence it exerts on our political systems,” Delia Ferreira Rubio, Transparency International’s chair, said in the report.
Nigeria ranked as the fourth most corrupt country in West Africa and was only better than Chad (162), Guinea-Bissau (168) and Equatorial Guinea (173).
