A human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN has advised the Federal Government to use constitutional means instead of resorting to force against the just inaugurated Western Nigeria security outfit codenamed, operation Amotekun.

Falana described the emergence of the security outfit to inability of the police to curb kidnapping and other criminalities in the South-west and the entire country.

In view of controversy surrounding the launching of the security outfit, he advised all the six governors in the zone to send bills to the sic Houses of Assembly on the new security formation.

Doing that according to Falana would lay to rest the debates over legality Amotekun in some quarters.

He stressed that people would continue to express divergent view on the matter if there is no law to that effect.

He stated, “Although I had cause to take issue with Mr Malami over his legal opinion on the security outfit, I was compelled to call on each of the South-West governors to forward a bill to the house of assembly of each state for the formation of Amotekun.”

“Amotekun is not a regional paramilitary organisation but a zonal security outfit being set up to assist the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in combating incessant killings, kidnapping, armed robberies and other violent crimes that are on the ascendancy in the region due to the negligence of the Federal Government to effectively police the country.”

Falana further advised the six attorneys general in the South-West states to ensure that the enabling laws for Amotekun are enacted by the respective houses of assembly without any further delay
