No less than 300 shops with goods worth millions of naira were razed down by fire on Sunday at the Kpirikpiri market in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The fire was said to have started on Sunday afternoon at about 1:25pm.

According to an eye witness who claimed anonymity, the fire incident was triggered by a bush fire at the back of St Patrick Primary school, a school situated behind the market.

Those who set the bush on fire were unknown at the time of writing this report.

The fire incident affected some sections of the Kpirikpiri market, which are; timber, mechanics, clothing, provisions and food stuffs.

At the time when our correspondent got to the scene of the incident, fire fighters were seen putting off the fire, so that it will not affect other sections of the market, but the damage had been down.

Traders who lost their goods to the fire incident were also seen crying for their lost goods, while others were moving out their goods from other sections of the market not affected.

One of the affected traders, who spoke with journalists at the scene of event, identified herself as Chidiebere, said she has lost all her savings in her provisions store that was burnt down, while adding that her husband lost a shop in the fire incident.
