Trump Taunts Democrats As Glitches Hold Iowa Democrat Caucus Results

Americans woke up on Tuesday morning to an unusual political nightmare.

The Iowa caucus fell into a state of chaos after Democratic Party officials spotted “inconsistencies” in the results, forcing them to grapple with apparent technical issues involving an app brought in to help streamline the process

This was supposed to be the first primary or caucus ahead of the 2020 Presidential election.

More than 14 hours after the results were supposed to be out, the results of the Democratic Party caucus were still being expected.

A Democratic Party that has hunted the incumbent President Donald Trump found itself engaged in damage control on how to assuage the feelings of its members, let down by the Iowa confusion.

This is a party that controls the U.S. House of Representatives and December 18, 2019 used its majority strength to impeach Trump following an inquiry that lasted from September to November 2019. The House passed two articles of impeachment, charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The Iowa Caucus may have strengthened the hands of Republicans in the Senate who are very likely to acquit Trump on Wednesday and pave way for an intense Presidential election.

Tweeting early Tuesday morning, Trump said “The Democrat Caucus is an unmitigated disaster. Nothing works, just like they ran the Country”

According to another tweet:

The Democrat Caucus is an unmitigated disaster. Nothing works, just like they ran the Country. Remember the 5 Billion Dollar Obamacare Website, that should have cost 2% of that. The only person that can claim a very big victory in Iowa last night is “Trump”.

In subsequent tweets, Trump defended Iowa as the first voting state in presidential primaries, blaming the Democrats for botching the caucuses. In 2016, Trump came in second in the Iowa caucuses behind Sen. Ted Cruz (Tex.).

“It is not the fault of Iowa, it is the Do Nothing Democrats fault. As long as I am President, Iowa will stay where it is. Important tradition!” Trump tweeted.

Trump then taunted the Democrats, writing facetiously: “When will the Democrats start blaming RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, instead of their own incompetence for the voting disaster that just happened in the Great State of Iowa?”

Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale was quick to channel his master’s voice with a vivid mixed metaphor: “Democrats are stewing in a caucus mess of their own creation with the sloppiest train wreck in history”

Speaking further, Parscale hit the Democrats hard expressing doubts about “the fairness of the process” – encouraging those suspicious Sanders supporters – and ask:

Hitting harder, he said: “And these are the people who want to run our entire healthcare system?

Writing early Tuesday, The New York Times said the Iowa caucuses could be messy. “On Monday night, for the first time, there will be four sets of results, and there is no guarantee that the same candidate will win them all.

“Four different candidates could even declare victory, with the right combination of votes, turnout, geography and luck.

The visibly anti-Trump CNN said the Democrats could not have got off to a more disastrous and embarrassing start.

“The party couldn’t even deliver a first-in-the-nation election night winner after a vote-reporting debacle in Iowa — where candidates spent months and millions of dollars vying for a glittering opening prize in their nominating duel,” CNN said.

Adding to the confusion is the claim of victory by the different aspirants.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders spoke of winning in Iowa’s caucuses, citing internal campaign data that placed him ahead of Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

Earlier, Mr Buttigieg told supporters that “by all indications” his campaign was “going to New Hampshire victorious”. He is referring to the forthcoming vote to select candidates in that state on 11 February.

Meanwhile, a fairly United Republicans started their primaries with President Trump coasting to victory in the 2020 Iowa Republican caucuses, quickly quashing his two lesser-known GOP rivals.

Trump won the Republican contest with 97 percent of the vote and 8 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press, while former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh achieved 1.4 percent of voters and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld garnered 1.2 percent.

The Democrats blame a new mobile app supposed to help officials quickly gather information from some 1,700 caucus sites throughout Iowa.

Glitches with a new mobile app caused confusion, and some caucus organizers were forced to call in results for the state party to record manually, introducing delays and the possibility of human error. Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price said the delays were not the result of a hack or intrusion.

The party, however, said it expects to release unofficial results later Tuesday after manually verifying its data against paper backups.
