Nigerians Praise N2.5 Billion U.S. Bounty On Shekau, Flay Nigerian Govt Kid Gloves Treatment

Reactions have continued to trail the announcement of the United States Department of State that it would offer a bounty of $7m, equivalent to N2.5bn for information leading to the arrest of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.
The announcement, which was made, on Tuesday, by the Rewards for Justice Programme, a counter-terrorism rewards programme of the US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, on its official Twitter handle.
The tweet reads:
“The United States Department of State offers a reward up to $7m for information leading to the arrest of the terrorist, Abubakar Shekau, leader of Boko Haram.”
Shekau is number eight on the list of the most wanted terrorists by the US.
He assumed the leadership role of Boko Haram after the killing of the sect’s former leader, Mohammed Yusuf.
Boko Haram had caused several atrocities in Nigeria and some other parts of West Africa, with the most popular ones being the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in April 2014.
In 2018, some schoolgirls from Dapchi in Yobe State, were kidnapped while releasing all of them except Leah Sharibu who refused to deny her Christian faith.
In recent times, many Nigerians have criticized the Federal Government for treating Boko Haram with kid gloves, following the plans to give amnesty to repentant terrorists by the Federal Government, while the bill to establish an agency for the repentant terrorists has scaled through second reading.
Reacting to this development, Many Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter, to commend the move, while lambasting the Nigerian Government for treating the Boko Haram sect with light hands.
