A war has broken out between the authorities of the University of Lagos and the institution’s governing council leading to an impromptu postponement of the 51st convocation scheduled to commence next Monday.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe on Thursday night announced the postponement of the convocation ceremonies upon the intervention of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu into the power tussle.

At issue is the claim by the governing council through its chairman, Dr. B.O. Babalakin that the council did not approve the convocation ceremony as required by extant law.

“I am to, therefore, request that you kindly advise the Vice-Chancellor to suspend the convocation and ensure full compliance with due process.

Upon the petition to the Federal Ministry of Education, the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, directed that the convocation be deferred pending the approval of the council.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echono who gave the directive through the National Universities Commission in a letter with reference FME/PS/606/C.I/VOL III/108  wrote:

“Re: Invitation to the 2020 convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos.”

“The attention of the Honourable Minister has been drawn to the attached copy of letter dated 2nd March, 2020 from the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr B.O. Babalakin to the effect that the 2019 convocation ceremonies were not approved by the Governing Council in line with the laws of the University.

“I am to, therefore, request that you kindly advise the Vice-Chancellor to suspend the convocation and ensure full compliance with due process.

“Please accept the assurances of the best regard of the Honourable Minister.”
