Reps Slam Multi-Choice For Not Operating Pay-As-You-View

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, resolved to probe Multichoice Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) for the non-implementation of the Pay-As-You-Go tarriff.

This was sequel to a motion moved by Unyime Idem (Akwa Ibom, PDP).

Hon. Unyime, in the motion, argued that DSTV and other Direct-to-homes service providers are not complying with the Pay-As-You-Go tarriff system in other countries.

He further argued that Nigerians who  constitute 40% of the total subscribers of DSTV are not get to use their monthly subscription due to one circumstances or another.

Mr Idem said it was worrisome that DSTV and other Direct-To-Home Service Providers have deliberately refused to implement the Pay As You Go Tariff Plan but rather charge users on a fixed monthly tariff plan, unlike what is obtainable outside Nigeria.

Speaking in support of the motion, Aminu Suleiman noted that DSTV is operating Pay-As-You View tariff plan in Kenya, but that of Nigeria is different.

“I have attempted for over a year now to sponsor a motion on the inhuman treatment the DSTV is dishing out to TV watchers in Nigeria. I say that because it’s not only in Kenya that DSTV is operating the Pay-As-You View.

“It’s just an abuse and playing with the intelligence of Nigerians. And the monopoly they enjoy contributes to this fact. We will have to encourage NCC to unbundle the entire process and allow investors to come in. They are South African company, and they don’t do this general viewing to the South African viewers,” he said.

Nigerians, in recent times,  have bemoaned what they perceived as high tariff plan being charge by DSTV, without corresponding dividends.
