Ondo 2020: Akeredolu Forges On In Marshy Waters
By Augustine Adah
Despite strong opposition from within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC to the second term bid of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, the governor has expressed confidence in his ability to pick the party’s ticket during the forthcoming party’s primaries.
The primary is scheduled for July.
Akeredolu has not relented in telling the people of the state how his administration has delivered on the promises made to the people of the state during the campaign for his first term election.
He said, “They is no match to me. I will win the primaries. We have delivered and the people on our side are more than those with them.
“lf we go for an election today we are sure of having over 70 percent votes across the state. So we are at home with the majority of the people in the state.”
“l am particularly moved by the magnitude of 4+4 signs that numerous people of the state have been displaying.”
However, those opposed to Akeredolu’s second term bid especially in the Unity Forum, a group within APC have intensified their effort to frustrate the governor’s re-election project..
In a bid to prove to the governor and his supporters that they don’t support his return to power in the October election, the group recently constituted a “7-man Candidate Emergence Committee” to pick a consensus candidate that will face Akeredolu in the party’s primaries.
The governorship aspirants in the group include, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, Chief Olusola Oke, Dr Segun Abraham. Others are, Ife Oyedele, Bukola Adetula, Banji Ayiloge, Jimi Odimayo and Kazeem Olanrewaju
Alhaji Ali Olanusi, Chairman of the Unity Forum and former deputy governor, who inaugurated the committee charged members to regard their emergence as a call to duty especially now that Ondo State needs to stop the torrent of capital flight that has allegedly crippled business activities in the state. Â
Akerdolu faced similar opposition to his election during the first term especially from the leader of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
It is not clear how much support the governor is getting from the leadership of the party at the centre, as the current crisis facing the party would no doubt affect the support he needed to counter home opposition.
Whether the governor would overcome the current opposition to pick the party’s ticket, time would tell.
