Govs Adopt Extreme Measures To Fight COVID-19

Nigerian governors are adopting stringent physical and sometimes, spiritual strategies towards combating the spread of the coronavirus.

In one of the most audacious moves on Thursday, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu after shutting the state’s borders to all traffic imposed a three day fasting and prayer programme to check the threat of the virus.

As at Wednesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that there were 174 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported in the country with two deaths.

While the virus has now been found in 12 states, those who do not have it such as Ondo are going to great lengths to stave it off.

Governor Ben Ayade after some initial bravado that saw him order the continuation of schooling made a sharp reversal and on Wednesday ordered the compulsory wearing of face masks in the state.

Cross River has also banned all sorts of gatherings of more than five persons.

In Anambra State, Governor Willie Obiano is on self isolation for the past eleven days having sat next to the Bauchi State Governor during the last National Executive Council NEC meeting.

Presently, all Anambra State land boundaries with other states are closed to human and vehicular traffic, beginning midnight on Monday, 30th March, 2020.

The Government of Delta State has also announced the closure of all its land boundaries with effect from Sunday, 29th of March 2020.

To support the fight in Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Sunday said he had donated his 10 -month salaries towards the efforts being made to check the spread of coronavirus in the state, while at the same time ordered a stay -at- home order on the people to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

In Sokoto State, the Government has closed all inter states routes into the state from midnight of Friday, March 27 to April 10, as initial two-week period to contain the spread of Coronavirus.

In Yobe State, Governor Mai Mala Buni, has directed the closure of the state’s borders from midnight of Tuesday 31st March, 2020 to guard against importation of the dreaded Corona Virus into the state.

Plateau State has also banned all sorts of public gathering.

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku banned travels in and out of the state with effect from Sunday, 29th March, 2020. He was also seen recently presenting preventive kits to residents of the state.

In Zamfara, there is a total lockdown, while gatherings of more than 20 people are banned across the state. Governor Bello Matawalle has also shut down all government offices, ministries, departments and agencies across the state.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, has banned the release of corpses for burial in Ebonyi, this is as the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi said it has deployed 250 personnel across the state to curtail spread of COVID-19 pandemic into the state.

In Kogi, Gov. Yahaya Bello ordered the closure of all land and water entry points into the state. All passengers of commercial vehicles coming or going out of the state are expected to go through health checks.
