The Federal Government on Friday dammed the assertions of Governor Nyesom Wike saying he had no right to know the operations of the Caverton Helicopter that brought in oil workers into Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Speaking during the regular press briefing of the Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID-19 in Abuja, the minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika vowed that the detained pilots would be released without being convicted.

He also described the air force and police officers who collaborated with Governor Wike to effect the arrest of the crew and passengers as incompetent.

Governor Wike had following the arrival of the helicopter expressed outrage over the flight saying that as the governor of the state that he ought to have known of the flight.

Responding to the questions on the issue, the minister said:

“On whether His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers State ought to know if the exempted Caverton Flight landing on a military base in Port-Harcourt belonging to the Nigerian Airforce; he does not need to know.

“The pilots will soon be released, restored and will not be any conviction based on the arrest.

“Arising from the constitutional provisions and the powers of Mr. President and the seriousness of this Task Force and the dangers of COVID-19 and the way we operate in civil aviation and military aviation that is why I said that the air force officers acted ignorantly when the chopper landed on his property to have called the governor and also the federal police who made the arrest within the premises of the military and prosecuted also acted ignorantly and exhibited incompetence.”
