The Federal Government on Wednesday dismissed the prosecution of passengers and crew of a Caverton Helicopter by the Rivers State Government saying that they acted in ignorance.

The minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika who said the security men acted in ignorance upon the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari gave permission for the movement even as he said Governor Nyesom Wike overstepped his bounds in acting on aviation matters which he described as an exclusively federal affair.

He spoke while responding to questions at the daily press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

Asked directly on the action of the Rivers State Government in prosecuting the pilots and passengers of the helicopter, the minister said that the flight was given permission to operate by the president upon considerations for the national economy.

According to him “President Muhammadu Buhari felt that this be allowed so that national revenue will not be lost.

“We had the authority and being on the Exclusive Legislative List and we had the power in civil aviation and guided by the Civil Aviation Act of 2006 approved such flights. And those flights were approved lawfully, legitimate and correct.

“We will do everything lawful and legal and reasonable to get those pilots back and for the operations to continue in the national interest.

“The air force officers who allowed the governor to come into the airport to arrest the pilots acted in dangerous ignorance.”
