Ebola Worsens DRC’s COVID-19 Woes

Amidst the ravaging Coronavirus, the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed a new case of Ebola.

The development is a setback to the country’s hope of declaring free from the virus, since February 17, 2020 of reporting its last case.

The new case of Ebola was confirmed in Beni, a town at the heart of the epidemic in Eastern DRC, The World Health Organization announced.

WHO had slated April 12 as the date to declare the country free from Ebola.

Prior to Friday’s announcement, the disease has killed about 2,264 of 3,453 people that contracted the virus, since its outbreak began in Eastern North Kivu province in August 2018.

DRC has also recorded cases of the novel Covid-19, the country has recorded 215 cases, 20 deaths and 13 have recovered so far.

According to the latest report, the patient was said to have died on Thursday morning in a hospital after showing symptoms of the virus.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyeus, confirmed in the incident, in a tweet, noting that surveillance and response teams are on ground to monitor the situation.

“Preliminary information shows that the new patient is a 26-year-old man in Beni territory,” the multi-sectoral committee for the response to the epidemic said in a statement.

“Our teams, in collaboration with the WHO, are already on the ground to deepen the investigations and implement public health actions,” he tweeted.
