The Lagos State Government has described a purported message being circulated on social media,  showing a list of private hospitals exposed to COVID-19 cases as “handiwork of mischief makers and fake merchants.”

The Secretary of Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, Mrs. Abiola Idowu, in a statement, on Thursday, said the list did not originate from the agency or the Ministry as erroneously written by those who peddled the false information.

Mrs. Abiola urged members of the public to disregard the purported list, saying the public should not stigmatize the hospitals with confirmed cases.

Recall that the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi said 17 private hospitals in the state have inadvertently attended to COVID-19 patients, noting that some of them will shut down operations for decontamination of their facilities.

Almost immediately after the statement of the health commissioner, a list of private hospitals appeared on social media with the warning that Nigerians should avoid them due to the exposure to COVID-19 cases.

“This is the handiwork of mischief makers and fake news merchants who are bent on causing panic in the community and eroding the successes recorded in the battle against COVID19.

“I, therefore, urge residents to disregard the list in its entirety and rely solely on the Ministry of Health and HEFAMAA for information on the operation of health facilities and management of COVID19 cases especially at this critical time.”

She disclosed that some health facilities in the state unknowingly treated patients with COVID-19, noting that such facility will be temporarily closed down for decontamination.

She said only state government approved facilities are expected to manage COVID-19 cases.

‘’I enjoin all health facilities operators in the State to direct all enquiries and complaints on COVID-19 case management as well as other issues bordering on their operations to the Lagos State Ministry of Health through HEFAMAA.
