MURIC Under Fire Over Kano Deaths Comment

The Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola has come under attack on the microblogging platform, Twitter, for describing the mysterious deaths in Kano as a “deliberate attempt” to reduce the Muslim population in the state.

The Islamic rights group, in which Prof Akintola is the head and major figure, said, “Is this a deliberate attempt at debilitating Northern population with its attendant impact on Muslim majority population in the country?”

In recent days, the number of deaths in Kano State has become a source of worry to many Nigerians, as the news of the death of prominent persons kept unabated.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his speech, on Monday, 27 April, 2020 ordered a two-week total lockdown in Kano State, while noting that materials and technical assistance will be given to the state government to address the issue.

Akintola claims did not go done well with Many Twitter users, especially Muslims who came out to dissociate themselves from him. They lambasted the Islamic scholar for making what they called an outrageous claim even without considering the fact that over 200,000 persons have died during this period of pandemic.

Some Twitter users asked the Muslim community to distance themselves from Akintola due to what they referred to as his baseless and foolish claims.
