The Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola has come under attack on the microblogging platform, Twitter, for describing the mysterious deaths in Kano as a “deliberate attempt” to reduce the Muslim population in the state.

The Islamic rights group, in which Prof Akintola is the head and major figure, said, “Is this a deliberate attempt at debilitating Northern population with its attendant impact on Muslim majority population in the country?”

In recent days, the number of deaths in Kano State has become a source of worry to many Nigerians, as the news of the death of prominent persons kept unabated.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his speech, on Monday, 27 April, 2020 ordered a two-week total lockdown in Kano State, while noting that materials and technical assistance will be given to the state government to address the issue.

Akintola claims did not go done well with Many Twitter users, especially Muslims who came out to dissociate themselves from him. They lambasted the Islamic scholar for making what they called an outrageous claim even without considering the fact that over 200,000 persons have died during this period of pandemic.

Some Twitter users asked the Muslim community to distance themselves from Akintola due to what they referred to as his baseless and foolish claims.

@Enitan_12 tweeted: “I think it is high time intellectual and responsible Islamic scholars in Nigeria rise to let MURIC know they are not representing the whole muslims populace so they should rethink the name of their association. They are not representing us all especially me!”

@SodiqTade tweeted: “MURIC claims Kano deaths suggest plot to decimate Muslim population…huh

I have been expecting the Statement tho, and it came a bit late.

MURIC won’t see the incompetency on the part of Kano State Governor.

All they are in for is the illusory conspiracy. Sighs.”

@barackderay tweeted: “Whose interest is MURIC representing,  the north or Muslims bcus, I as a Muslim, they don’t represent me.  Confused set of people.”

@Onyiforlife tweeted: “DSS can’t arrest him? Plot by who? Muric should name them.?? Muric can’t speak against Muslims Govs deporting Almajiris from one state to another or Almajiris are not Muslims? Hypocrite at it’s peak.”

@Tutsy22 tweeted: “MURIC says Kano deaths is part of a plan to reduce Muslim population in Nigeria. Moi: Those that can actually sit down in front of this man and listen to him speak on issues, are very patient people. One must appreciate such special breeds of Retards.”

@renoomokri tweeted: “Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) claims there is an attempt by unknown persons to reduce the population of Muslims in Nigeria via the strange deaths in Kano. Is there a virus that can target only Muslims and exclude Christians?#FreeLeahSharibu #RenosDarts.”

@hafsyblinks tweeted: “Imagine we don’t have Muslim president presently and Kano doesn’t have Muslim governor, maybe they’ll be proposing war. MURIC is not representing all the Muslim population please, set of confused people.”

@Lobatan_tunde tweeted: “I hereby state it that MURIC does not represent m nor my rights as a Muslim in this nation or anywhere.”

@DrCOmole tweeted: “MURIC is a gang of extremists in my view. None of my muslim friends have anything good to say about their constant flag bating for needless controversy and ridiculous claims. I believe most people will see them for who they are. In a democracy, you have all sorts on display.”
