Anambra Guber: Ekwunife Fights From Two Zones

Senator Uche Ekwunife, representing Anambra Central in the Senate is tipping herself as the most qualified person to return the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the Anambra State.

However, her aspiration has raised fresh issues concerning the zoning of the governorship in the state.

Ekwunife has been an enigmatic political figure in the state and is bidding to be the first woman to be elected as governor of the state.

Other women who have made remarkable imprint in the state’s politics include Senator Joy Emodi, Dame Virginia Etiaba among others.

Ekwunife is, however, believed for now to be the only prominent female among not less than 20 males and mostly billionaires seeking to contest the Anambra State governorship in 2021.

Speaking when she made a formal introduction of her bid, Mrs. Ekwunife pledged to be the woman to lead Ndi Anambra to remove the hegemony of the All Progressives Congress, APGA over the state.

“This election is war, this is not ordinary election, we are going to battle to remove the party in power and when you are going for such battle, you don’t need your second best but your best. We cannot put our best on bench. Our target is government house, we  must go with our best, the tested, trusted and okayed to deliver, which is me.

Commenting on the issue of zoning, Mrs. Ekwunife was quick to project her advantage saying that she is the most favoured of the aspirants.

“Some people said there is  zoning, assuming and not conceding there is zoning, though, PDP said there is no zoning, but if Anambra people say there is zoning, it favours me most.

“Women have dual citizenship. I am from Anambra South and married to Anambra Central. A woman can represent  her people either from her place of birth or her husband’s place” Uche Ekwunife stated.

Ekwunife is from Igboukwu in Anambra South but married to an Nri man in Anambra Central. She has all along played her politics in Nri and presently represents Anambra Central Senatorial District.

However, following the turn of all three senatorial districts in occupying the governorship, Anambra has been thrown into a debate on zoning.

While Anambra South which occupied the office through Dr. Chinwoke Mbadiniju from 1999 to 2003 and again for three months through Mrs. Etiaba.

While some want a fresh start that would open up the office to any one of the three senatorial districts, stakeholders from Anambra South want the rotation to start from their territory.

Whatever, Mrs. Ekwunife seems to be making her pitch from the two zones.
