What APC’s Olive Branch To Tinubu Means

After the plot to cripple his hold on the All Progressive Congress APC, the Yobe State Governor and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party, Mr Mai Mala Buni on Thursday led the committee to the National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

At the end of the consultation, as the delegation briefed waiting newsmen, Tinubu was quick to affirm that there was no need for reconciliation as according to him the issues that enveloped the party were not totally strange in a political association.

”We have no differences to be sorted out in the APC; we just had consultation and it is how our party, the APC, would continue to be a progressive party,” he said.

The visit was seen as part of the reconciliation efforts is, however, viewed by some political observers as just an effort to appeal to the sensibilities of the national leader who was reportedly not pleased with the recent moves in the party.

Recollect that President Muhammadu Buhari surprisingly backed Victor Giadom, as Acting National Chairman of the party and sacked the Adams Oshiomole led-NWC mostly peopled by Tinubu’s loyalists.

The sack of the NWC was publicly seen as a victory for some APC governors who had been complaining of the alleged highhandedness of Oshiomhole.

They were also bitter about what was seen as a plot by the Jagaban boys to take over the party and deal decisively with dissenters.

That plot was allegedly already running with the moves initiated against Victor Giadom in the Rivers State chapter of the party.

However, the move against Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State was, however, the last straw that broke the camel’s back.

Some believe Tinubu fell into the Obaseki bait and empowered his traducers.

Before the 2019 election, Buhari and some party leaders had unsuccessfully pleaded with him to allow Akinwunmi Ambode have a second term. However, apparently moved by the resoluteness of his supporters in Lagos who were unhappy with Ambode, the National Leader did not heed the outside plea for Ambode.

So, when the Obaseki matter erupted and he was equally dispensed with it, it provided fodder for the anti-Tinubu characters to push their case on the highhandedness of the Oshiomhole group.

The Buni led caretaker Committee is aware that it has a herculean task uniting the already fractured ruling party, especially as the political actors intensify struggle to control the party ahead of the 2023 elections.

In appointing the Caretaker Committee, the party carefully accommodated associates of Tinubu like Akpan Udoedehe, Governor Isiaka Oyetola of Osun representing South West and Akinyemi Olaide of the House of Representatives.

How successful the task will be is what cannot be said now.

But whether the governors and some other party leaders who unsuccessfully pleaded with the Jagaban to intercede on behalf of Obaseki during his altercation with Oshiomole may now want to give up their new found freedom now is open to debate.
