The embattled deputy governor of Ondo State, Mr. Agboola Ajayi and the State House of Assembly were on Thursday divided over the delivery of the notice of impeachment issued to Mr. Ajayi.

While the deputy governor insisted that he had not been served, the House of Assembly insisted that the notice had been delivered and acknowledged by the office of the deputy governor.

The squabble came as the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun directed the chief judge of the state, Justice Oluwatoyin Akeredolu to constitute a panel to investigate the allegations leveled against the deputy governor.

The chairman of the House Committee on Information, Mr. Gbenga Omole disclosed on Thursday that the notice of impeachment had been served on the deputy governor and was duly acknowledged by his office.

To buttress his point he showed the acknowledgment endorsed by an unnamed official in the office of the deputy governor.

However, the deputy governor’s chief press secretary, Mr. Babatope Okeowo affirmed that the notice had yet to be delivered to the embattled deputy governor.

The request to the Speaker to constitute the panel was upon the articles of impeachment of the deputy governor signed by 14 of the 26 members of the House of Assembly.

In the letter, the Speaker said: “By the Resolution of the House today (Thursday) pursuant to Section 188 (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it was resolved that the allegations be investigated forthwith.

“It is in line with the above that request that you set up a seven-man panel to conduct the investigation as resolved by the Honourable House and the panel shall, as soon as possible, report back to the House.”
