Mallam Isa Funtua, a close associate of President Muhammadu Buhari who has often been described as a leading member of the famed Cabal around the president is dead, AIT reported late on Monday.

Funtua was said to have died of cardiac arrest. He was from Funtua in Katsina State. He was aged 78.

A former president of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria, NPAN, he was publisher of the defunct Democrat Newspaper, a now rested Kaduna Newspaper.

He was also chairman of Bulet International Nigeria Limited, a major construction company which was known to have constructed a phase of the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja.

Funtua had been known to play a powerful role in the affairs of the Buhari administration and defended many of its policies.

He was mentioned as a candidate for the job of Chief of Staff to the president when Mallam Abba Kyari died last April. He, however, spurned the suggestion implying that he was too old for the job.
