Independent ADB Panel Clears Adesina
There was joy in the Presidential Villa on Monday evening as it emerged that Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina has been cleared of the corruption allegations leveled against him at the African Development Bank, ADB.
GWG learnt that the clearance by the independent panel headed by former Irish prime minister, Mrs. Mary Robinson was conveyed to the board of the bank on Monday evening.
The clearance brings to an end the rift between African and external power houses in the continental development bank.
A whistleblower had alleged acts of nepotism and other misdemeanor against Adesina, but the internal ethics committee of the bank cleared Adesina of all the charges. The United States which is the largest external shareholder in the bank, however, pushed for an independent panel outside the bank to scrutinize the report of the ethics committee.
Despite opposition by some African statesmen led by President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria the US administration had its way leading to the appointment of the three man panel led by Mrs. Robinson.
The Robinson panel cleared Adesina of the charges leveled against him setting him in good stead for a second term. He is the eight president of the ADB and the first Nigerian to have held the position.
