How Ize-Iyamu, Obaseki Toasted Mummy Benson-Idahosa At 77
By Emmanuel Aziken
The two leading political protagonists in Edo State, Godwin Obaseki and Osagie Ize-Iyamu on Tuesday went out of their way to felicitate with one of the state’s leading figures, Archbishop (Mrs.) Margaret Idahosa.
Though it was not a landmark birthday, the two men apparently in a bid to win identify with her went out of the way to laud the leading Pentecostal church leader in the state.
Mrs. Benson-Idahosa is the widow of Archbishop Benson Idahosa, the founder of the Church of God Mission one of the fathers of the Pentecostal church in Nigeria.
He died on March 12, 1998 just before the birth of the Fourth Republic.
His wife has admirably carried on the mantle and stirred the church under grace albeit with minimal controversy.
Besides aiming to draw votes from the Pentecostal flock, both candidates would also be aiming to identify with the female electorate for whom Mrs. Benson-Idahosa has served as a fitting role model.
On the occasion of her 77th birthday, Ize-Iyamu a Pentecostal pastor went out of his way to identify with her.
In a statement released by John Mayaki, the Chairman of the State Media Campaign Council of the APC, Ize-Iyamu described Archbishop Margaret Idahosa as one of the founders of modern Pentecostalism in Nigeria whose zeal and proficiency in the mission of God paved the way and serves as model to many more preachers.
The statement read: “The account of Nigerian evangelism will not be complete without the giant strides of the amazon, Archbishop Margaret Idahosa. Through zeal and proficiency in the mission of God, she became the first African Female Archbishop. An author, preacher, and pastor, Archbishop Margaret Idahosa has etched her name eternally in the sands of time.”
“As a trained educationist, Archbishop Margaret Idahosa’s light of greatness shines in the scholarship sector, illuminating and imparting knowledge on young people who will exude excellence according to the guidance of God’s principles. Maintaining her reputation as a trail-blazer, Archbishop Margaret Idahosa became the first female Chancellor in Africa in 2002 when she became the Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University.”
On his part, Governor Obaseki, congratulated her for what he described as her invaluable counsels.
Obaseki said: “I congratulate Archbishop Dr. Mrs. Margaret Benson-Idahosa, on this auspicious occasion and thank you specially, for your invaluable counsels and support for my administration.”
The governor noted that, “Archbishop Dr. Mrs. Margaret Idahosa is a special gift to all of us in Edo State and beyond. She has been a source of inspiration and strength to millions of families across the world.
“Through her religious works, she has contributed significantly to nation-building, and remains a source of hope to our youth population who are in constant search for light-bearing role models.”
