An image of a pack of hydroxychloroquine tablets, a drug touted as a potential cure for COVID-19, with the price tag of N50,000 posted on the microblogging platform, Twitter, has set tongue wagging on social media.

A Twitter user @DirectorSolomon, took to Twitter to post a picture of the pack of hydroxychloroquine, he bought in a pharmaceutical store in Port Harcourt, the state capital of River state.

He wrote, “When vaccines finally comes, Nigerians would build houses off the backs of poor people… People in Government will sacrifice the people they are supposed to serve.”

Many Nigerians have lamented over the alleged price hike of the drug touted as a potential cure for COVID-19 by some Nigerian pharmaceutical stores, an action that is seen by selfish and greedy by many.

Some have called on the regulatory agencies to checkmate the excesses of pharmaceutical stores and supermarkets, during this pandemic.

Hydroxychloroquine has become a subject of debate, sparking controversy in several countries of the world, as it is being touted as a potential cure for the deadly COVID-19, however, the claim has been rejected by World Health Organization, WHO.

Recently, a US-based medical doctor, Stella Emmanuel claimed that she had treated 350 COVID-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine, Zinc and Zithromax and they all recovered from the deadly virus.

Her claim was supported by US President, Donald Trump, who had earlier claimed that  hydroxychloroquine can cure COVID-19.
