Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo has hit at the late Senator Buruji Kashamu as a man who maneuvered the law and politics to escape justice but still fell to the supremacy of the divine will on mortality.

Obasanjo’s stance came as friends from across political divides mourned the late controversial politician who died on Saturday from complications of COVID-19 at 62.

Among those who mourned him was former Governor Ayodele Fayose who in his condolence message to the family took out space to condemn the earlier message from President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo and Kashamu were initially political allies until the former president separated from him allegedly on the claim that the deceased was a fugitive from American justice.

President Obasanjo was particularly peeved that the Goodluck Jonathan administration patronized Kashamu saying that the relationship between the duo dignified corruption.

Obasanjo in his reaction to Kashamu’s death in a statement signed by his spokesman Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo said while Kashamu’s death was “sad”, his life and history left “lessons for those of all us on this side of the veil.”

“Senator Buruji Kashamu in his lifetime used the maneuver of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria,” Obasanjo said.

“But no legal, political, cultural, social, or even medical maneuver could stop the cold hand of death when the Creator of all of us decides that the time is up.

“May Allah forgive his sin and accept his soul into Aljanah, and may God grant his family and friends fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
