Following the public outcry by some lawyers, the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has withdrawn Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State Governor, invitation as one of the speakers of its annual conference.

The move came after more than 3,000 lawyers signed a petition for the Kaduna State governor to be stopped from addressing the conference.

Governor El-Rufai who has a very active presence on twitter has remarkably been out of the social media channel since the agitation against him started about three days ago.

The governor’s last tweet was on August 17, 2020.

In cancelling the invite, the NBA in an announcement, on Thursday, via its Twitter handle said:

“The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir El-Rufai, by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the Governor, ” the tweet reads.

GWG had reported the outrage among lawyers over the inclusion of El-Rufai as one of the key speakers of the forthcoming NBA annual conference, while calling for boycott of the conference.

El-Rufai, Nyesom Wike, Rivers state governor, Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Justice Tanko Muhammad, Chief Judge of Nigeria, and Olusegun Obasanjo, former President, were listed as key speakers.

Other key speakers include: Ike Ekweremadu, former deputy Senate President,  Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the federation, Brian Speers, President of Commonwealth Lawyers Association, and Dame Linda Dobbs, Director of Training of the Judicial Institute for Africa.

Some lawyers argued that the ideology driving the NBA is antithetical to the personality and actions of El-Rufai, noting that El-Rufai shows disregard for the rule of law as the governor of Kaduna state.

Meanwhile, over three thousand lawyers, had as at Thursday, signed a petition asking for the NBA to withdraw the invitation of the Kaduna state governor.
