Why 2023 APC Ticket Should Go South – El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has strongly made the case for power shift within the All Progressives Congress, APC in 2023 despite his personal belief against the principle of zoning of political offices.

Speaking on Monday the Kaduna State governor, however, said that Nigeria may need to suffer the prescription of zoning based on the informal agreement reached by political leaders of the APC prior to 2015.

He spoke in an interview on Channels Television monitored by GWG.

His stance followed the stance by the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and also by the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola last week.

All three men, El-Rufai, Amaechi and Fashola remarkably belong to the political camp that is aligned against the perceived aspiration of the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Asked on whether he would support power shift to the Southeast, he said:

“I think it is important I make the clarification. Personally, I am against zoning because I believe that no country in the thirty years I have spent studying nations, I have not seen a single country that made progress by picking leaders based on where they come from or based on religion.

“I am against it and I don’t practice it if you look around me, you will see that I work with people from every part of the country, every religion. I don’t care. I just want to get things done and I want the most competent person with the capacity and commitment. But that is a personal position.

“However, I believe that as a party that after eight years of President Buhari that we should honour the informal agreement of ensuring that power goes to the South, whether it is South-West or South-East, that is a different matter.

“We have agreed, we have a gentleman’s agreement that power will go to the South and I support that. In as much as I don’t think we should select leaders that way but in the present day Nigeria, that is an interim measure to pursue. But having said that, our party has not taken any decision as far as I know.”
