Why We Want Buhari To Resign – Northern Elders
By Emmanuel Adigwe
The Director, Publicity and Advocacy of the Northern Elders forum, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has opened up on the reason why the group called for the resignation of President Buhari.
GWG writes that the recent killing of over 40 rice farmers by Boko Haram insurgents in Zarbarmari, Borno State, has sparked waves of reactions from various quarters and the group not happy with the incessant killings in the region have asked President Buhari to resign since he has failed to protect the people.
Baba-Ahmed, speaking with Channels Television, Politics Today, stated that President Buhari had earlier asked former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign even under less insecurity.
He said that it was funny that President Buhari who had time to analyse the security situation could not make any meaningful success in solving the problem of insecurity in the country.
Reiterating the point on the need for Buhari to resign, he said:
“Certainly, the president swore on the Koran as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to protect the lives and property of Nigerians and he has failed to do so. He has stayed six years in office and there is no indication that he is likely to improve.
“So, what else than to ask him? If there is honour, like they do in developed countries for leaders who fail to protect citizens. So yes, things have gone worse. The same president was saying to Jonathan few years ago to step aside and give a more competent hand the chance to run the country.
“He has had a long time to study the situation as a general, he is the commander in chief of the armed forces. He is a military man so he doesn’t have any excuse.
“He put people in charge, they are still in charge. We are losing this war. The security challenges are more manifest, more people are dying every day. “
Speaking further, the elder statesman refuted the assertion that Boko Haram has been degraded or technically defeated as he stated that more people are dying under the watch of President Buhari and Nigerians are tired of hearing the words that the insurgents have been technically defeated.
