Manchester United’s campaign in this season’s UEFA Champions League came to an end after they lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig in Germany. The Europa League will be the next destination for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s wards went behind as early as the second minute, courtesy of a goal by Angelino and Amadu Haidara extended the lead 11 minutes later after he was set up by Angelino. Angelino’s opening goal from Marcel Sabitzer’s cross was the earliest goal United have conceded in the competition in over eight years.

United were two goals down in the first 13 minutes, however, they needed a draw to secure a knockout phase berth. The goal count would have been 3 in favour of RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena, only for the VAR to rule Willie Orban’s goal offside.

A frontline spearheaded by Marcus Rashford found it difficult to unlock Leipzig’s defense at half-time.

Domestically, Manchester United had mastered the art of coming from behind to churn out results. They had 45 minutes in the second half to whip up the magic.

Meanwhile, Leipzig showed that they had other plans when Kluivert’s 69th minute finish gave Leipzig a convincing three-goal lead. Harry Maguire’s shambolic defending was culpable for Leipzig’s third. That was after Bruno Fernandes’s free kick had hit the framework.

Bruno Fernandes handed the 1999 champions a lifeline when he tucked home from the penalty spot in the 80th minute. Paul Pogba who came off the bench got another one. But, Leipzig held on to claim three points and avenge a 5-0 loss at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture.

RB Liepzig and French champions PSG will represent Group H in the last 16. A gutted Ole Gunnar Solksjaer still has a chance to attain European glory in the Europa League.
