Buhari’s No Show Puts Gbajabiamila In Trouble

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has found himself between the devil and the deep blue sea in Nigeria’s inflammable political front line as he tries to navigate between acrimonious forces within the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The first testing of the waters for the Speaker happened on Thursday as President Muhammadu Buhari failed to heed the unanimous resolution of the House of Representatives to appear before the House.

The Speaker is now under pressure to protect the bruised ego of the House and at the same time protecting the interest of the presidency.

Speaker Gbajabiamila would be remembered as the one who after conveying the resolution summoning the president to Buhari last week patched up words to assure a bleeding nation that the president would honour the ‘invitation’. The invitation was to calm nerves after 43 Nigerians were beheaded in their own country by bandits.

On Thursday after the president failed to come a motion asking the Speaker to explain the non-appearance became a test of the waters for the presiding officer.

“Last week, I recall that this House passed a resolution. Subsequently, I read that the president has considered our request,” Rep. Solomon Bob from Rivers State said in his point of order.

“If this House can pass a resolution and we have a situation where such a resolution is abused, it means our very existence is being questioned. I think that the speaker should address us on the current situation. The entire country is watching.”

The motion brought pin-drop silence to the House as the members waited for the Speaker to respond.

Gbajabiamila, however, responded with tact and political sagacity saying,

“Hon; your point of Privilege is well noted. We wait for official communications from Mr. President as opposed to newspaper publications.”

Though Gbajabiamila appeared to walk away from the motion on Thursday, multiple sources say that the motion on Thursday may only be the beginning of the Speaker’s battle for political survival.

GWG gathered that members are beginning to again assess the prospects of the Speaker with some members planning strategies to challenge the leadership.

Gbajabiamila’s case could also be compounded if those against his political mentor and National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu also bring him into the spotlight to distabilise his leadership of the house.
