The All Progressives Congress has postponed the controversial plans to undertake a nationwide membership, update and revalidation exercise. The revalidation programme had been scheduled to begin on Saturday, December 12, 2020.

The postponement was announced by the National Secretary of the Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee, John Akpan Udoedehe, at the APC National Secretariat, Abuja, on Thursday.

The revalidation exercise had been touted as a plan by rivals of the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take the party from him. Tinubu as the champion of the merger that led to the formation of the APC in 2013 had been reckoned as having custody of the membership data following the first membership registration exercise.

The national leader’s rivals many of whom are opposed to any his 2023 presidential bid are alleged to see the membership revalidation exercise as a way of plucking the party from him.

Announcing the postponement of the registration exercise, Akpanudoedehe said:

“On account of several factors however, including the fast-approaching Christmas and End of Year celebrations; as well as the interest of our Christian members; and the objective of ensuring maximum participation, the CECPC has decided to shift the date of the Exercise to the second week of January 2021.

“The CECPC sincerely regrets any inconveniences that may arise out of the change in date; but appeals for the understanding of our teeming members and the general public, in the interest of preparing a solid foundation for a successful Exercise.

“The Party wishes you all; as well as members of the public, a peaceful and rewarding Yuletide, and End of Year celebration.”
