How Manchester Derby Became Cat And Mouse Game

Old Trafford played host to the 183rd Manchester derby which finished in a no-goal stalemate. None of the sides put in the required efforts to break a tight deadlock.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side which were fresh from a disappointing Champions League exit in mid-week prevented their noisy neighbours from compounding the lingering woes. They sat back, allowed City to have more of the possession and were meticulously defending throughout the game with the hope of scoring from a counter-attack.

City created the better chances, but, were unable to find that finishing touch to dismantle their opponents. The visitors got frustrated as the game progressed.

In the cagey encounter, Victor Lindelof’s flick-on from a corner fell awkwardly to Scott Mctominay who couldn’t squeeze it into the net in the 11th minute.

Harry Maguire did the job of a leader when he blocked Raheem Sterling’s goal bound shot moments later. City came close again ten minutes before the break as Riyad Mahrez’s strike was kept out by David De Gea. At halftime, the score was 0-0.

Both sides came out of the tunnel, refreshed to continue from where they stopped. They both stuck to their game plans and there were no significant attempts at goal. Bruno Fernandes  and Kevin De Bruyne were the only players who had the best chances to draw first blood after resumption.

Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer would have to shake hands at the end of the game with long faces as their teams weren’t able to find a win. City and United now sit 7th and 8th on the table.
