Crack detectives have been mobilized to arrest nineteen armed robbers who reportedly escaped from the Cross River Police Command headquarters in Calabar.

The escape which was reported by Vanguard has, however, been rebuffed by the police which claimed that only three robbers made an attempt to escape but were promptly brought back into their cell.

The escape a police source disclosed took place on Sunday night after the robbers used a hacksaw to cut the iron key to the cell where they were detained and made good their escape

“As I speak to you, the station guard and some other officers are being detained. This could not have happened with the SARS. Our lives are in danger” a police source who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Vanguard.

He affirmed that none of the escapees has been re-arrested as at midmorning today but the authorities have despatched crack teams across the city to track the runaway robbers.

However, Ms Irene Ugbo, the Cross River State Police Command spokesperson said “The information is not true. Only three robbers attempted to escape but were arrested and returned to the cell.”
