Tinubu, Fayemi Rivalry Divides Southwest Speakers

The rivalry for the 2023 presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC between Bola Tinubu and Kayode Fayemi has again come to fore with the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly disowning a resolution from Southwest Speakers and former Speakers to back the national leader of the party. The new twist in the Tinubu, Fayemi rivalry follows last Wednesday’s closed-door meeting of Speakers and former Speakers from the Southwest.

GWG had reported that 20 Speakers and former Speakers from the Southwest met late on Wednesday in Ibadan where the decision was taken.

GWG had also reported the absence of the Ekiti State Speaker.

Governor Fayemi of Ekiti State is widely believed to have interest in the 2023 presidential ticket of the party. He is reportedly being backed by a number of his colleagues for the ticket.

The Tinubu, Fayemi rivalry for the ticket has been the cynosure of political developments in recent times in the Southwest.

The Ibadan meeting was, however, attended by a former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Adeyemi.

GWG also reported that the meeting was convened by the incumbent Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa. Lagos is Tinubu’s political base.

The meeting had resolved to mobilise traditional rulers and other stakeholders towards a convergence on Tinubu as the Southwest’s choice for the presidential election.

However, the incumbent Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Funminiy Afuye has balked at the resolution and the meeting saying he was not part of it. He also claimed he was not invited.

He told Saturday Punch:

“I’m not aware of any meeting, neither was I invited to any such meeting. I can therefore not speak to any meeting I’m not privy or invited to,” the Ekiti speaker said apparently against the background of the Tinubu, Fayemi rivalry for the APC ticket.

Obasa had at the meeting urged all current and former speakers present should after the meeting go back to their respective states to set up the template that would see to the actualisation of the agenda of an Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu presidency come 2023.
