A high-flying Southampton dumped Arsenal, the defending champions out of the FA Cup tournament on Saturday afternoon at the fourth round cracker at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The Southampton host with their 1-0 victory over Arsenal showed every intention to humiliate the defending champions from the early minutes of the game.

Five minutes into the encounter, James Ward-Prowse almost caught Arsenal’s goal keeper, Bernd Leno off guard as his corner kick hit the crossbar. The Arsenal goalkeeper was called into action again in the 14th minute as Adams hit a shot from inside the area.

The breakthrough finally came when Walker-Peters’ cross into the danger area deflected wickedly off Gabriel and into the net in the 24th minute. It was a sorry tale for the Arsenal star watching his deflection go into his own net.

That goal did not stop the host who continued to raid the Arsenal area with ferocity with a determination for more goals.

How Southampton Dumped Arsenal Out Of FA Cup

Arsenal struggled to create clear cut chances as the first half was all about Southampton’s dominance until the referee’s whistle for half time.

On resumption, Arsenal stepped up and almost got rewarded for their tenacity as Eddie Nketiah had a one-on-one chance after he was slipped through on goal by Nicolas Pepe’s pass.

However, Thomas Partey attempted to beat Ben Forster from 30 yards out, but his effort blazed over the bar.

Southampton watched their opponents play catch-up, but they held on stoically as they held on to see out the game against the defending champions. With grit, the host held on ensuring that Southampton dumped Arsenal out of the tournament and set up a fifth-round fixture with Wolves.

Mikel Arteta’s wounded lions have failed to pass the second test of this season’s FA Cup after they emerged as champions in the last campaign.
