Storm Over Who Beat Up Ondo Commissioner?

Controversy was brewing at the weekend over who beat up the Ondo Commissioner for Works, Mr. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye at a party meeting on Friday.

Mr. Yusuf-Ogunleye was according to reports beaten up when youths invaded an All Progressives Congress, APC meeting in Iju, Akure North Local Government Area.

Sources said the meeting was to sensitise party members ahead of next week’s validation of membership and registration exercise.

However, not long after the commissioner arrived it was gathered that youths besieged the venue of the meeting and used dangerous weapons on the commissioner. Many other persons present at the meeting were reportedly injured.

A source privy to the development speaking as to why the youths beat up the Ondo Commissioner, told The Punch:

“As you know, we are starting the registration of our members in a few days time. So, the APC chairman in Akure North called a meeting and invited other leaders of the party to discuss the issue.

“The meeting had not even started when some thugs invaded the venue. They started raining abuses and curses on the Commissioner. They beat up the him and nearly killed him.

Controversy Over Who Beat Up Ondo Commissioner?

“This is a sad development. We don’t know what could have caused it. What is the big deal in membership registration? I am sorry for this party.”

Some of those present put the blame for the fracas at the doorstep of the minister of State for Niger-Delta Affairs, Senator Tayo Alasoadura. It was claimed that the attack was a fall out of still unknown issues between them.

As the source told The Punch, “Those who attacked the Commissioner are known boys of Chief Alasoadura. We thought Alasoadura has grown beyond that, considering his age and where God has put him.

However, the spokesman of the minister Mr. Dayo Joe was quick to dissociate his principal saying:

“I just believe those who did it (attack) saw it as a factional meeting. It was not an APC meeting. They only camouflaged under the umbrella of APC. This is because some other leaders whom they believe are not loyal to them were not invited to that meeting.

“So, it was a factional meeting and, as a result, some people were not happy. That was what happened. Alasoadura was not even aware. He was not even around. So, he wouldn’t have been the mastermind of the attack.”

GWG reports that the commissioner and the minister are from the same local government area and are both allies of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

GWG further reports that the cause for the beat up of the Ondo Commissioner may be due to struggle for the control of the Local Government Area.
