Imo North: Ibezim Loses Appeal Against Disqualification

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Saturday upheld the disqualification of Frank Ibezim as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last by-election in Imo North Senatorial District of Imo State.

The Appeal Court judgment came a day after the Supreme Court also disqualified the claim by Ibezim’s rival, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume to be declared the candidate of the party for the election.

The three-man panel of the Court of Appeal, in the unanimous judgment upheld the December 4, 2020 judgment of Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja that disqualified Ibezim as the APC candidate.

Ibezim was disqualified on the claim that he made false declarations concerning his credentials and his age in the documents submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Stephen Adah, JCA who read the judgment on behalf of the three man panel said the appellate court could not find any fault in the judgment delivered by Justice Ekwo and as such dismissed the appeal.

Ibezim is a protegee of Governor Hope Uzodinma who is pitched in battle against Senator Ararume.

The summary of the Supreme Court judgment rejecting Ararume and the Saturday judgment affirming Ibezim’s disqualification opens the prospect of the APC losing the seat which INEC declared it won without a candidate to the PDP.
