Canadian actor, Christopher Plummer, who came to global reckoning for his role as Captain Von Trapp in epic movie, The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 91.

Plummer won several awards but he is best remembered for his role as the disciplinarian father determined to rein in his ambitious and music loving children in the Sound of Music film that was cast against the background of the Second World War.

Born into an aristocratic Canadian family, he, however, chose acting as a vocation early in life.

He went on to win an Oscar in 2012 for the film Beginners. He was also nominated for The Last Station in 2010 and All the Money in the World in 2018.

He also acted as Klingon in the sixth Star Trek film and played TV anchorman Mike Wallace in 1999’s The Insider.

Plummer’s prolific acting career saw him play Sherlock Holmes in Murder By Decree.

The legendary actor reportedly died at home with his wife, Elaine Taylor at his side.

His co-star in the Sound of Music epic, Dame Julie Andrews eulogized him in a statement issued to the PA news agency thus:

“The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend.

“I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humour and fun we shared through the years.”

The official Twitter account for The Sound of Music in a statement posted said:

“We’re saddened to hear of Christopher Plummer’s passing. His legacy as our Captain will live on in THE SOUND OF MUSIC forever. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this time.♥️ pic.twitter.com/hDV3q1opzJ
