Okonjo-Iweala To Be Named WTO D-G Feb 15

Erstwhile Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is to be named as the next director-general of the World Trade Organization next week, it emerged on Tuesday.

The WTO made the announcement of the appointment of its first female and African head in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

It said the next director-general would be named at a special meeting of its General Council scheduled to hold on February 15, 2021.

“The WTO’s General Council will hold a special meeting on 15 February at 15:00 Geneva time to consider the appointment of the next Director-General. The meeting will take place in virtual format,” it was disclosed.

Okonjo-Iweala’s path to the leadership of the organization came after her only rival for the position and South Korean trade minister, , Yoo Myung-hee who was her remaining rival in the keen competition withdrew last week.

Her withdrawal was followed by strong support from the new United States administration which gave its strong support for her candidature.
