A Truck driver, Musa Muhammed, 33, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for alleged dangerous driving and killing a pedestrian.

Muhammed, a resident of Whorf Road, Apapa, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge bordering on dangerous driving and manslaughter.

The defendant was alleged to have caused the death of an unknown man, believed to be about 30-year-old.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 5 at Owoduni area inward Ojota, Ketu, Lagos.

Perezi said that the defendant drove a Mark Truck vehicle with registration No. HJA 192 YD and had no driver’s license, roadworthiness and hackney certificates.

“The defendant drove his vehicle in a dangerous and reckless manner, having no regard for other road users and caused the death of a pedestrian whose name and address is unknown.

“The defendant, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle, knocked down and killed the victim, who wanted to board a bus,’’ he said.

He said that the offence contravened sections 18 and 20 (1) Road Traffic Act, Cap 172, Vol. 45, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2012.

The truck driver, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.M. Ajayi, granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Ajayi said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until March 10 for DPP’s advice.
