Reason has been adduced for the delayed release of the Kagara students and staff who are spending a second week with their abductors. It emerged that the release of the Kagara students was aborted at the last minute recently after the kidnappers were panicked by the presence of overlooking helicopters.

According to The Nation at the point of their release, the bandits developed cold feet over the presence of helicopters trailing them as they returned to their hiding place.

Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello had earlier given assurance that the bandits will soon release the students and staff.

Meanwhile, former Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar (Rtd) has rejected negotiating with terrorists and bandits as the best way to tackle insecurity.

Abubakar said this while speaking to newsmen after a meeting with the Nigerian Governors Forum in Minna. He spoke against the backdrop of worries over the delay in the release of the Kagara students.

Gen Abubakar said that the best way to solve Nigeria’s banditry and kidnapping problems is to ensure that the crimes are not committed in the first place.

“Even if anyone knows the location of students, it will be foolhardy to storm the place in a bid to fight and bring them back. In the process, some innocent lives will be lost.

“Nigeria’s security architecture is overstretched and the Police Force is underpopulated, hence the need for support from the citizens and an increase in manpower.

“Nigeria must go back to the time when brotherly love existed. Let us go back to when we were our brothers’ keeper,” Abdulsalami pleaded.

Meanwhile, with the release of the Kagara students aborted there are fears that they kidnappers may in desperation begin to lose bearing.

One report has emerged of the kidnappers threatening that they would stop feeding their captives. It was gathered that the kidnappers warned that they would starve their victims to death in the face of the continued logjam.
