Nigerians Salivate, What Happened To Mr. Bigg’s?

Nigerians have been whetting their gastronomic emotions with fond recollections of the delicacies from the staples of one of the country’s biggest fast-food chains, Mr. Bigg’s. It was, however, for the most, a social media drag on one of the country’s leading brands which in the view of many social media commentators had lost its brand value and taste alongside its market share.

The fast food outlet owned by one of Nigeria’s leading quoted companies, UAC Plc rose to become a fond delight for both children and adults in the late eighties and nineties winning recognition for some of their pastry delights. The scotch egg was a special favourite for many who reacted at the weekend with the claim that it was unbeatable, perhaps only matched by that from another once popular brand, Chicken George.

The waning of Mr. Bigg’s brand follows the big bang it made in the country after it was launched by UAC in 1986. At that time The Guardian wrote an editorial with a claim that it would change the pastry inclinations of Nigerians.

While Mr. Biggs may have changed the industry and the culinary inclinations of Nigerians, the seeming comatose state of the brand touched many Nigerians at the weekend.

The conversation followed a question in a publication asking the difference between egg roll and scotch egg.

Replying, a twitter user, with the identity, Relatable Life, wrote that “Mr Bigg’s really had the best Scotch Egg in Nigeria and fumbled the bag.”

His comment subsequently triggered a social media trail of comments that brought the issue of how brands fail in Nigeria.

We miss the old days that Mr. Bigg’s was the go place on Sundays

Mamiwater Ndi Highway (Hubris Bravado) writing of the esteem he had for Mr. Bigg’s, said:

That day my friend called me and said I got A, I told her to check well o. Until three of my class guys called me to congratulate me, because I was the only person that got A. I felt like Queen Elizabeth, I went to MR Biggs at Okpara Avenue to go give myself a treat.

The scotch egg was a special delicacy from Mr. Bigg’s

Mr Biggs needs a comeback, all we ask for is for them to come back to what they used to be in the 90s.

R.Y.A tweeting at @TheYettss took it spiritual saying:

I’m going to put Mr Bigg’s in my prayers this Ramadan

Sele Ijewere on the other hand expressed disappointment that Chicken George which blazed the trail before the coming of Mr. Biggs similarly fumbled with its own gastronomic delicacies.

I think Chicken George were the first to fumble the bag. Their scotch eggs beat Mr. Bigg’s then sha

Big Bad Wolf!!!, however, claimed ignorance of Chicken George, reflecting that it may have become a lost brand.

Really? Not sure I ever got scotch eggs from Chicken George. I was too carried away with Mr Bigg’s

But many others including Bysö tweeting at @hawt_red praised Mr. Bigg’s offering of scotch egg.

Never tasted better scotch egg in my life

Mr Bigg’s used to be best at everything snacks– scotch egg, meats, poundo, jollof etc . But now. All they’re good for is making descriptions . My house is on street 2, opposite Mr Bigg’s. Allen avenue

Mr Biggs was ahead of its time. It even had a signature smell when you walk in, especially that Marina outlet. Memories!
