Edo Reviews Curfew, Asks Civil Servants To Resume

The Godwin Obaseki administration has reviewed the curfew imposed in Edo State to now span from 12 midnight to 5am, in the wake of remarkable progress made in containing the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the state.

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, who disclosed this during a press briefing on Friday, noted that civil servants are now to resume to work for regular work hours while complying with the state’s COVID-19 protocols.

According to him, “While compliance to all non-pharmaceutical measures against the infectious diseases must be strictly adhered to, we urge eligible members of the public to avail themselves the opportunity and get vaccinated against the deadly virus.

“With improved COVID-19 indices in the state, the curfew imposed is now reviewed to span from 12 midnight to 5am daily as against the former 10pm to 5am daily.

“All civil servants are now to resume the regular working hours but with strict observance and compliance to all COVID-19 protocols including observing social distancing, compulsory use of facemasks and regular handwashing, amongst others.

He continued: “We will like to thank our dear people for your cooperation and support, as we work together to contain the ravaging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and restore normalcy to our state,” he said of the progress made in Edo State.

“Since December, 2020, we have had to confront the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a government committed to ensuring the health and safety of our people, we deployed coordinated strategies with measures to break the chain of transmission and contain this pandemic.

“We put in strict guidelines, including curfew and other measures to contain the spread of the virus. Mobile courts were set up and an extensive sensitization campaign was embarked on. In all these, we recorded impressive compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions, and we appreciate everyone for their roles in ensuring that the protocols were strictly adhered to. We also like to thank our religious leaders and others for their support.”

Noting that Edo State has made good progress in the fight against COVID-19, he said: “We are happy to announce that we have recorded remarkable success in the management of the pandemic as our indicators have improved. For example, the case positivity rate has drastically dropped from over 23.1 percent to one percent; fatality rate has been relatively stable; active cases have continued to reduce and now stand at 37, as our hospitals and isolation facilities are almost empty.

“We are witnessing a steady rise in COVID-19 recoveries, and the government has intensified the rollout of vaccination of eligible members of the public against this deadly virus, with over 16, 328 persons vaccinated in the first eight days of the vaccine rollout in Edo State.”
