Another Blow For Activists As Innocent Chukwuma Dies At 55

The Nigerian civil rights community mourning the death of Yinka Odumakin was on Saturday night further saddened with the news of the death of the founder of Cleen Foundation, Innocent Chukwuma, is dead.

Chukwuma was also the head of Ford Foundation, West Africa.

He died on Saturday evening at 55 after he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, an aggressive cancer of the blood.

His long time friend and associate, Edetaen Ojo, confirmed the sad incident.

Ojo, the Executive Director of the Media Rights Agenda(MRA), said: “With profound shock & sadness, I regret to inform you that Innocent Chukwuma passed away a few hours ago, in the evening of April 3. May his soul rest in peace.”

Innocent Chukwuma read religious studies at the University of Nigeria (UNN) but gained prominence as a student union leader.

He was a founding member of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) before he started CLEEN foundation.

The father of three daughters was just diagnosed with cancer on Friday night but died before he could begin scheduled chemotherapy sessions on Saturday night.

Among those to mourn Innocent Chukwuma were Governor Kayode Fayemi and his wife, Bisi, who were themselves veterans of the civil rights struggle before their foray into the political arena.

Mourning the death of Innocent Chukwuma, Dr. Fayemi said:

Still distraught from Yinka Odumakin’s demise, Bisi and I woke up to the most devastating shock of Innocent Chukwuma’s death. Inno was an outstanding colleague and friend from our days at the barricades. Our thoughts are with Josephine and the children. May he rest in peace. JKF

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Yinka Odumakin, the spokesperson of Afenifere and one of Nigeria’s leading social activists died on Saturday morning after recovering from COVID-19 complications.

The twin deaths of Odumakin and Innocent Chukwuma have thrown Nigeria’s civil society community already distressed by the malaise in the society into agony.
