Rivers Won’t Bow, Wike Vows After New Attacks

The Rivers State Security Council presided over by Governor Nyesom Wike has calledĀ  for calm following an overnight attacks on police personnel in the State.

The emergency meeting of the Security Council which took place at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Saturday, condemned the attacks by unidentified armed assailants on some police formations.

The governor, reiterated that no amount of intimidation or cruel resort to barbaric attacks will make the State succumb to secessionist agenda of those who are bent on plunging Nigeria into another unwarranted crisis.

He, on behalf of the Government of Rivers State, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the Policemen and the Rivers State Police Command.

“On behalf of the Government of Rivers State, I wish to offer our heartfelt condolences and express our deep sadness in the wake of these horrific attacks.”

Governor Wike urged residents of Rivers State  to be calm, as the Security Council has taken measures to secure the State.

He further enjoined them to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement or persons to security agents.

Meanwhile, the Police Command in Osun said it has arrested eight suspected members of a kidnap syndicate who relocated to hide in the state after operating in Benue.

SP Yemisi Opalola, the commandā€™s spokesperson, said in a statement on Saturday that the suspects were arrested on Friday at Omo Ijesa village, following credible intelligence reports.

Opalola further said that when interrogated, the suspects confessed to have killed their last victim, one Mrs Akiishi Catherine, 65, and three others in their previous operations.

ā€œThe suspects were arrested on May 7, sequel to credible intelligence the command received and acted upon in a follow-up on a case of the kidnap of a 65-year-old, Mrs Akiishi Catherine in Benue State.

ā€œThe operation was led by the Commissioner of Police in Osun, Olawale Olokode.
