Edo Commissioner sacked Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki has been dragged to court over his failure to appoint commissioners and running Edo State as a sole administrator.

The court process was initiated by the founder of One Love Foundation, Chief Patrick Eholor who in the processes filed before a Benin High Court is asking the court to determine if the governor were right in running the administration with his deputy, Philip Shaibu and the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Osarodion Ogie only.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Obaseki was re-elected for a second term in September 2020 and sworn into office on November 12, 2020.

Following the inauguration, Obaseki appointed Mr Ogie as the SSG with a promise to make other appointments including commissioners in February 2021.

However, that promise has been breached with the governor shying away from making a defence of the situation.

However, GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the failure to appoint officers of the government has been traced to rumbles within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The APC as then led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole had rejected him upon musings about the governor’s qualifications upon which he promptly defected to the PDP and got the party’s governorship ticket.

It is alleged that the governor wants the PDP structure dissolved to enable him take control or a substantial share of the structure.

His move has reportedly been rebuffed by the state executive which came into office in April 2020 just weeks before his defection from the APC to the PDP.

In a motion filed before the Benin High Court through his lawyer, T. A. Akahomen, Eholor is among others asking the court to determine if the Obaseki has the right to run his government without appointing commissioners.

Noting that it is more than six months after the governor was inaugurated for a second term on November 12, 2020 that the governor is the only one among the 36 governors who has not appointed a cabinet.

He particularly noted the absence of a commissioner for justice and Attorney General, an office he said is strategic for the functioning of the state.

“We voted for a governor and not a sold administrator or Emperor,” he told journalists on Monday.
