Gunmen were on Monday morning laying siege to Awka, the Anambra State capital and attacking various locations in the town with students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, NAU students said to be particularly at risk.

Among the places said to have been attacked is the ‘B’ Division of the Nigerian Police that is close to the State Secretariat.

Some sources revealed that the gunmen were also operating at Ifite village, which is not far from the the permanent site of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka which is predominantly occupied by UNIZIK students.

Also said to have been hit were Amawbia community and Nodu village in Okpuno community both of which are within the Awka South Local Government Area.

The attack on Awka comes in the wake of repeated attacks by yet unknown gunmen in parts of the Southeast.

Governor Willie Obiano was as at Monday morning yet to respond to the development.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Governor Hope Uzodimma had on Sunday alleged that the majority of the more than 400 gunmen apprehended in recent attacks on Imo State were not Igbo.

Though the governor did not say the ethnic identity of the apprehended gunmen, his assertion flies against his earlier assertions that his political rivals and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB were the ones orchestrating the attacks on Imo State.

The police and other authorities in Anambra State were yet to respond to the emerging development that was said to be still unfolding.
