lift twitter ban Nigeria

The Muhammadu Buhari administration was on Saturday commencing moves to prosecute Atiku Abubakar, Shehu Sani, Femi Fani-Kayode among others for the violation of the administration’s ban on twitter operations in the country.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who issued the directive said that he had directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation to begin immediate prosecution of those who violate the Federal Government’s order suspending Twitter operations in Nigeria.

Malami’s spokesman, Umar Gwandu, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘Twitter ban: Malami orders prosecution of offenders.’

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Atiku Abubakar, Shehu Sani and Fani-Kayode among other critics of the administration have vowed to sustain their twitter accounts. They have also reportedly been tweeting despite the cut off by the telecommunications providers by using the Virtual Private Network.

The government has now moved to deal with the violators of the ban, Malami said in the statement.

The statement by the AGF read, “Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN has directed the immediate prosecution of offenders of the Federal Government ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria.

“Malami directed the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, to swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government De-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria.

“Malami directed the DPPF to liaise with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, National Communication Commission, NCC  and other relevant government agencies to ensure the speedy prosecution of offenders without any further delay.”

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that despite the ban that some of the administration’s leading critics have vowed to persist on the social networking platform.

This won’t be my last tweet’ – Atiku who has been a political rival to Buhari and is personally very active on Twitter was quoted as saying in a tweet by an online medium.

Former Senator Shehu Sani who has been tweeting has jested over the ban according to reports. He was quoted as tweeting on Saturday morning:

“I’m sure Baba will be asking of the ‘meaning’ of that VPN.

“Those of you from the North, if you want to tweet, take a train to Maradi in Niger Republic, tweet and return home.

“ If you live in Lagos and want to tweet, just go to Cotonou, tweet and come back.

“Those of you from the South South who want to tweet,.take a boat through your Creeks to Cameroun, tweet and come back,” he wrote.

Femi Fani Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation in a tweet via his Twitter account on Saturday morning was also quoted to have flayed the government move tweeting thus:

“The suspension of Twitter by the FG has proved to the civilised world that they are weak, unstable, paranoid, insensitive, vindictive & delusional.

“It is a grave abuse of power & a perfidious, insidious & brazen attempt to deny the Nigerian people of their right to free speech,” he wrote.

The move by the Buhari government to prosecute Atiku and other critics over alleged violations of the Twitter ban is bound to raise the crisis in the country and well mask the persisting state of insecurity in the country.

As Nigerians pondered the twitter ban on Saturday little mention was made of reports that more than 60 persons were killed by bandits on Thursday night in Kebbi State.
